President's call to put him in jail isn't 'normal — Comey

Hours before the interview aired, the president went on the offensive, accusing Mr Comey of "many lies".

In his book, Comey takes direct aim at Trump's appearance, a particularly sensitive topic for the president, although a tactic he often employs himself when insulting others.

The jumble of references appeared to allude to unsubstantiated accusations Mr Trump has previously made claiming Comey lied in Senate testimony last May in denying he had served as an anonymous news source. He labelled Comey "disgruntled" and accused him and allies of having "committed many crimes".

Comey says Trump's actions "tainted an institution that pursues the truth".

The Post-ABC poll finds 49 percent saying Trump has done "too little" to criticize Russia for allegedly violating international law, 38 percent saying he's handled the issue "about right" and 4 percent thinking that Trump has criticized Russia "too much". But he said that in Trump's case, he could not discount the possibility that the president had been compromised.

"These are more words I never thought I'd utter about a president of the United States, but it's possible", Comey told ABC News' chief anchor George Stephanopoulos.

"Lady Justice can't be peeking under the blindfold to see if Donald Trump wants her to convict so-and-so and not convict so-and-so".

McCabe was fired two days before his scheduled retirement last month. The retired general pleaded guilty in December and is now cooperating with Mueller's investigation.

"A person who sees moral equivalence in Charlottesville, who talks about and treats women like they're pieces of meat, who lies constantly about matters big and small and insists the American people believe it, that person's not fit to be president of the United States, on moral grounds", Mr Comey said. He also suggested Comey should be imprisoned, tweeting, "how come he gave up Classified Information (jail), why did he lie to Congress (jail)". The president brought up the allegation multiple times, Comey writes, including an unprompted denial: "I'm a germaphobe".

Trump fired Comey last year amid the FBI's investigation into Russian election interference. Oops! That disclosure became one of the top 100 reasons Clinton claims she lost the election.

"We're numb to it", he said. Ryan merely articulated what "reporters", and I use that term very loosely, nuance every day in those White House briefings. But, he acknowledged, "I was operating in a world where Hillary Clinton was going to beat Donald Trump, and so I'm sure that it was a factor".

Trump fired Comey in May 2017, setting off a scramble at the Justice Department that led to the appointment of Mueller as special counsel overseeing the Russia investigation. I think he's morally unfit to be president. This is not OK. "That's our foundation. And so impeachment, in a way, would short circuit that".
