Iran plays down potential impact of Pompeo appointment on nuclear deal

Tillerson is the latest member of Trump's cabinet and White House staff to leave. The firing comes as Trump prepares for delicate talks with North Korea's Kim Jong Un. He is on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which will hold Pompeo's confirmation hearing and vote on whether to report his nomination favorably to the full Senate.

"The torture of detainees in US custody during the last decade was one of the darkest chapters in American history", said Republican Senator John McCain, who himself was tortured as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam.

I also would like to thank CIA Director Mike Pompeo for his Intelligence Community service and to congratulate him on his pending nomination to serve as Secretary of State.

Of course, as president, if he wants to fire his Sectary of State because the secretary disagrees with him over trade policy or over how to handle the Russians, he is entirely within his authority to do so. Trump expressed confidence in his selection, tweeting that Pompeo will do a "fantastic job". Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

But a statement released by Under Secretary Steve Goldstein implied that Mr Tillerson was first made aware of his firing by President Trump's tweet. The former Exxon Mobil CEO was among the advisers who reportedly tried to stop the president from ordering steep tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.
